Skylighting

Skylighting Installation and Service

Skylights:  Before the invention of durable, economical glass, skylights were found outside of public buildings and the homes of the wealthiest citizens. Advances in glass and cost of manufacturing, skylights  (sometimes called “roof windows) began to show up in more modest structures.

Roof mounted Skylight

Popularity has continued to increase since the 1950s for the following reasons.

  • Skylights have allowed natural lighting into the home. Natural sunlight is balanced, therefore allowing the human eye to perceive colors better than artificial light.
  • Roofing materials, including metal roofs and asphalt shingles, allow the installation of skylights.
  • Privacy does not need to be sacrificed like traditional windows.
  • They are installed in Kitchens and bathrooms allow for more wall space to be used for appliances or storage and give more light than the typical window.
  • You can find a wide range of shapes, sizes, and styles for your skylight needs. Skylights can open either manually or remotely, allowing fresh air to enter the room. Some come with blinds enabling you to control the amount of light. Tinted glass is also widely available.
  • Installation is best performed by a roofing company. It is not a job for an average homeowner or most window companies. Choosing an experienced professional roofing company is your most logical option. The skylight must be flashed and sealed like your chimneys or attic vents. Otherwise, leaks can develop that can do minor or significant damage to the structure.
  • Installing new Skylights may require cutting through the roof trusses. P.C.S. Roofing  can determine the correct distribution of weight and load-bearing properties.
  • The average lifespan for a skylight is between 10 and 20 years. When re-roofing your home, it is recommended to replace them.
