How to Perform a Basic Roof Inspection Safely Before a Roofer Arrives

The roof is perhaps the most important part of any house, but many homeowners take it for granted. Unless it’s leaking or damaged, they assume that it’s in good condition. The truth is that your roof should be inspected at least once a year by a professional roofer. This job should only be left to a professional, but you can complete a basic inspection yourself if you suspect any problems with your roof. Here’s how you can do that safely.

Walk Around Your House

Most of your roof inspection will consist of you walking around your house and looking up at your roof. Look for damaged or missing shingles, dented gutters, piles of debris, and areas that might be sagging. Use a pair of binoculars if you want to get a better look.

As you walk around your house, pay attention to the rain spouts around your gutters, where you might see asphalt granules from your shingles. This usually means that your shingles are damaged, even if the shingles themselves look like they’re in good shape.

Get On a Ladder

If you can, grab a ladder and climb to its highest point. This will allow you to get a closer look at your roof and identify any potential problems. Don’t climb onto the roof itself though; that can be very dangerous if you don’t have the proper training and equipment.

Check Your Attic

You can learn a lot about the state of your roof by checking your attic. If you have access to it, go up there and check the ceiling and the insulation. If you see any daylight shining through, you have holes in your roof that should be repaired as soon as possible. Damp insulation in your attic is a sign that you have a leak in your roof. It’s only a matter of time before water from the leak gets into the rest of your home and causes serious damage, so don’t hesitate to have this addressed.

A basic inspection can tell you quite a bit about your roof, but it’s no substitute for a thorough inspection by a professional roofer. If you haven’t had a roof inspection in over a year or you think that your roof may be damaged, contact PCS Roofing today. Our staff will be happy to assist you.
